2727 St. charles avenue, NEW ORLEANS

This house was designed by noted local architect Thomas Sully in 1896 as a single family residence for the Johnston Family. Over the years it had been extensively modified into first two residences and eventually 10 units before being abandoned for more than 15 years. The program to save the badly deteriorated house was to transform it into an historic Bed and Breakfast Residence while restoring the character and detail of the original residence. The challenge in this case was to accommodate a commercial use in a residential setting with significant building code and historic fabric issues. The design opened up the original public rooms of the house including an octagonal dining room, restored the several orders of exotic wood millwork, created 8 bedroom suites and an Owner’s apartment on the third floor served by an elevator.
